Boise Seeks $5 Million Federal Grant for Substance Abuse, Mental Health<\/a> Services<\/p>\n

BOISE\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 The City of Boise\u00a0has applied for\u00a0a\u00a0$5\u00a0million\u00a0federal\u00a0Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services<\/a> Administration<\/a>\u00a0(SAMHSA)\u00a0grant to launch\u00a0Boise\u00a0STREETS\u00a0(Safety Through Recovery, Engagement, and Evidence-based Treatment and Support)\u00a0to improve care for adults experiencing homelessness who are also living with severe mental illness, substance use\u00a0disorders or\u00a0co-occurring behavioral health conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy improving coordination across healthcare, housing and public safety systems, Boise STREETS\u00a0would\u00a0aim\u00a0to\u00a0increase housing stability, improve health outcomes, and enhance public safety in Boise and throughout Ada County,\u201d said Mayor Lauren McLean. \u201cWe are grateful for\u00a0our\u00a0local and federal\u00a0partners\u00a0who\u00a0work hand-in-hand with the city on this work every day\u00a0and\u00a0have\u00a0provided letters of support as we pursue\u00a0this grant.\u201d<\/p>\n

If awarded, the grant\u00a0would\u00a0establish\u00a0a comprehensive, street-based network that connects individuals with immediate treatment, recovery support, and housing navigation while strengthening coordination among the agencies that already serve them<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople experiencing chronic homelessness and significant behavioral health challenges often interact repeatedly with\u00a0the same agencies, such as\u00a0emergency rooms, emergency medical services, crisis centers, law enforcement and the justice system,\u201d said Jessica Barawed, the\u00a0Mayor\u2019s\u00a0advisor on\u00a0homelessness.\u00a0\u201cWhile each\u00a0organization\u00a0currently\u00a0provides valuable support,\u00a0services are not always\u00a0well connected,\u00a0making\u00a0it difficult for\u00a0people\u00a0to receive the long-term, coordinated care needed to achieve lasting stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than\u00a0requiring\u00a0individuals to navigate multiple\u00a0systems independently, the initiative\u00a0would\u00a0create\u00a0a coordinated pathway linking first responders, healthcare providers,\u00a0justice\u00a0system\u00a0partners,\u00a0street outreach teams, and recovery housing\u00a0into a unified\u00a0network focused on\u00a0timely\u00a0intervention and sustained support<\/p>\n

The application brought together local county, justice\u00a0system, and community partners and included support from\u00a0Idaho\u2019s\u00a0federal delegation, reflecting a shared commitment to improving outcomes for some of the community\u2019s most vulnerable residents. With a condensed application timeline, the flexibility, responsiveness, and willingness of\u00a0local and federal\u00a0partners to quickly engage and contribute,\u00a0were instrumental in developing and\u00a0submitting\u00a0a strong application.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The City of Boise expects to hear back from\u00a0the federal government on the application later this fall.<\/p>\n
