(WLBT) -U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson cut the ribbon Monday on the new G.A. Carmichael Family <a href="https://lumeamara.online/?p=6334" title="Health warnings could reduce youth’s hours spent on social media”>Health Center on Grand Avenue, marking the opening of a $7 million, 23,000-square-foot facility designed to expand healthcare access in Yazoo County

City and state officials joined Thompson for the ceremony. The facility opens to the public Sept. 7

The center will offer primary care, pediatrics, podiatry, women’s health services, sonography including 3D imaging, dental services, WIC services, behavioral health care, and an in-house drive-thru pharmacy

The facility also includes an indoor walking track, demonstration kitchens, and community wellness spaces

Thompson said the facility addresses a longstanding gap in local healthcare access

“What you have to understand is that Yazoo County is medically underserved,” Thompson said. “What we now have is a first-class facility that the people who live here can receive medical care. They won’t have to go to Jackson, they won’t have to go to these other places. They can come right here at home.”

James L. Coleman Jr., chief executive officer of G.A. Carmichael, said the project reflects a collective commitment to the community

“This is a culmination of what I would say, dreams deferred,” Coleman said. “Sometimes people don’t have enough faith and belief in what you can do for other people. This day represents the fact I had an amazing team that has come together to provide a building quality healthcare for quality citizens of Yazoo City in Mississippi.”

Coleman said the facility is meant to signal the community’s value to its residents

“Most people don’t feel like they deserve the type of quality care that others do,” Coleman said. “So this building again represents the fact that people came together to say Yazoo City, we care about you. Yazoo, we value you. Yazoo, this is for you.”

During the ceremony, Thompson learned the facility will bear his name. The honor carried personal significance for the congressman

“Bennie Thompson was delivered by a midwife because there were no doctors in my community,” Thompson said. “So now, we have doctors available as well as midwives to deal with childbirth. So, it’s important to remember from whence you come. Everybody couldn’t go to a hospital. Facilities like these matter.”

Want more WLBT news in your inbox?Click hereto subscribe to our newsletter

See a spelling or grammar error in our story?
