Breaking the Cycle: Understanding and Preventing Childhood Violence | Baker Institute

Violence in childhood is a global issue that spans generations. Whether it be through the epidemic of firearm injury and violence or child abuse and neglect, this cycle of violence remains persistent. But what are the systemic drivers of this crisis, and what can be done to end it?

On Sept. 3, the Baker Institute Center for Health Policywill host a discussion on the implications of exposure to violence in childhood, including the increased rates of mental and physical health disorders. The main speaker will be Katelyn Jetalina, Ph.D., an epidemiologist studying childhood violence, who was named to the TIME100 Most Influential People in Health in 2024 for her work translating complex medical science into accessible public data. Along with other health experts, the discussion will focus on the policies and challenges involved in combating misinformation and advocating effectively for children’s safety.

This event is sponsored by the Texas Children’s Hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the McGovern Medical Schoolat UTHealth Houston. It is free and open to the public.
