CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A free community health event in Cincinnati this month aims to help families learn more about their health through screenings, education and activities

Organizers said the expo will include more than 30 vendors, giveaways and a range of health-focused programs. “There are more than 30 vendors, we have giveaways, and it’s a lot of fun,” said Donna Jones Baker, a co-chair of the Black Family Wellness Expo

The event, hosted at New Prospect Baptist Church by The Links Incorporated and other organizations including Network for Hope, will offer free health screenings and education. Planned offerings include free testing of average blood sugars, or hemoglobin A1C, kidney care workshops, stress management programs, and programs targeted at men’s health and wellness

Ruby Crawford-Hemphill, a co-chair of the expo, said her nursing background drives her commitment to community education. “I’ve been a nurse for over 40 years and as a nurse, I’ve always been passionate about making sure we are getting the information to people who need us,” Crawford-Hemphill said. “We’re here for caring to make sure that our population is aware of the illnesses and diseases – it’s not a death sentence there’s things you can do – prevention is important.”

Network for Hope’s Andrea Johnson said the organization will also focus on organ donation awareness. “We are committed to giving hope to those more than 100,000 people who are waiting for a life-saving transplant,” Johnson said. “And in addition to that doing the education and outreach about the power of organ donation.”
