LAC LA RONGE INDIAN BAND — Building on a first gathering that attracted more than 1,600 participants, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band is inviting families back for its second annual Family Wellness Gathering, a three-day event focused on healing, culture and community connection
The gathering will be held July 14-16 at the La Ronge Urban Reserve in Treaty 6 Territory and will bring together families, Elders, youth, community leaders and service organizations for workshops, cultural activities, speakers and entertainment
Chief Tammy Cook-Searson told SaskToday the gathering responds to challenges many families continue to face, including the lasting impacts of recent wildfires, family violence, addictions, drug use and community violence
“We held the first gathering following the wildfires, but it also addressed the social issues affecting our communities,” Cook-Searson said. “We wanted to create a safe place where families could come together, hear stories of struggle and recovery, and know support is available when they’re ready to make changes.”
Cook-Searson said speakers will include community leaders, athletes and people who have overcome addiction or gang involvement and are willing to share their healing journeys
Throughout the three days, attendees can take part in cultural demonstrations, including trapping, teepee teachings and other traditional activities, while connecting with local agencies offering mental health, wellness and family supports
Cook-Searson said one of the most meaningful outcomes from last year’s gathering came from a participant who sought addiction treatment after attending
“One woman who was struggling with alcohol told us the gathering inspired her to go to treatment,” she said. “Those are the stories that remind us why this work matters.”
Organizers have expanded programming following the success of the inaugural event and expect attendance to exceed last year’s total of 1,600 participants
Each day begins with breakfast and continues through the evening with presentations on the main stage, cultural activities, vendor booths and family programming. Lunch and supper are provided daily
Evening entertainment includes performances by Black Rain; local musicians including Carl Crane and Dennis Cook of Southend; a gospel country jamboree; square dancing; and a jigging contest. A community steak night sponsored by Cameco is scheduled for July 15, along with barbecues and family entertainment throughout the gathering
This year’s guest speakers include former Olympic gold medallist Billy Mills, a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation who won the men’s 10,000 metres at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and Waneek Horn-Miller, a Mohawk Olympian and former Canadian women’s water polo player. Other featured guests include actor Justin Rain and former NHL player Rich Pilon
A ceremonial Lance Run, involving 32 runners, will also be part of this year’s gathering, alongside canoe races, horse-and-carriage rides and a variety of family activities
Cook-Searson said the gathering is intended to become a lasting annual event that strengthens families while encouraging people to seek help when they need it
“Our goal is to provide a safe space where families can spend time together, hear inspiring stories and connect with organizations that can support them long after the gathering ends,” she said
The Family Wellness Gathering is hosted by LLRIB Child and Family Services and the LLRIB Prevention Program, with support from Cameco, the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, Kitsaki Management, local municipalities, emergency services, the RCMP, Northlands College and other community partners
