Many kids in King County are struggling with depression or with mental health concerns, although according to the latest Washington Healthy Youth Survey, things are getting incrementally better. Among thousands of 10th graders surveyed in 2025:

    • 29% reported feeling anxious compared to 31% in 2023
    • Nearly 26% reported depressive feelings compared to about 30% in 2023
    • About 75% of participants expressed strong feelings of hope, compared to 71% in 2023

And in 2025, only 61% of 10th graders reported having an adult they can turn to when they feel sad or hopeless. State officials point out that the kids who did have a trusted adult to turn to “were less likely to report feeling anxious, self-harm behaviors, or contemplating or attempting suicide than their peers who reported no adult support. This reinforces research indicating supportive adults and systems have a positive influence on the health and wellbeing of youth.

With resources stretched, how can parents help teens navigate the back-to-school transition in a healthy way? The King County Health and Seattle Children’s Magnuson Clinic, the hospital’s behavioral health hub and home to one of only three pediatric Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinics in the nation, are hosting the free Youth Mental Health and Wellness Resource Fair this Saturday, Aug 15.  The free community event offers parents and youth the chance to learn about Seattle Children’s programs and over 40 community partners that support youth and families’ mental and behavioral health.

The fair will include interactive activities “focused on building healthy coping skills, movement, mindfulness, creativity, and emotional well-being.” Visitors will also get to meet Seattle Children’s therapy dogs. Organizations will be on hand to talk to parents and teens about suicide prevention, overdose prevention, and coping skills. Participants will also be able to take home free Narcan kits, medication lock bags, firearm lock boxes, trigger locks, and more.
