Pregnancy diabetes linked to type 2 diabetes 13 years earlier

Pregnancy diabetes may disappear after childbirth, but its shadow can stretch far into a woman’s future

A new Danish research suggests women who later develop type 2 diabetes after having diabetes during pregnancy may face the condition almost 13 years earlier than women without that history. The findings, due to be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Milan, raise a simple but important message: recovery after pregnancy should not mean forgetting the risk.

Researchers studied 2,865 women who had previously been pregnant and were later diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Among them, 173 had experienced diabetes during pregnancy. Their average age at type 2 diabetes diagnosis was 43.5 years, compared with 56.3 years among women without it. Strikingly, about four in ten were diagnosed before 40, versus only six in 100 in the other group

Women with previous pregnancy diabetes were also twice as likely to need insulin treatment early after diagnosis. However, body weight, blood sugar control and several major diabetes-related <a href="https://lumeamara.online/?p=6596" title="Why Mental Health In Pakistan Is A Tax Policy Issue”>health problems were broadly similar between the groups

The findings strengthen the case for regular checks after pregnancy, helping women spot warning signs early and protect their long-term health through timely care
